Weekly Bri: How To Limit Screen Time

It’s no secret that since the pandemic hit last March, screen time has drastically gone up for everyone. I also believe that TikTok is to blame for the rise in screen time. It definitely makes up a lot of my own screen time everyday…..they know exactly what they are doing.

All jokes aside, here are 5 ways that you can reduce screen time:

  1. When you are eating, be device free. This is easier said than done, as many people, including myself, like to watch Netflix or TikTok while eating a meal if there’s no company around. But eating without your device will allow you to be more present and pick up on hunger cues, as well as give your eyes a break from your screen.
  2. Avoid going on your phone 30 minutes after you wake up and 30 minutes before going to bed. Anyone else gets completely sucked into their phone in the morning, and next thing you know you’re running late for class and don’t want to get out of bed? Yep… same. Try getting ready in the morning without being on your phone, and perhaps read a book before going to bed.
  3. Call your friends/family instead of texting. Honestly, when is the last time you picked up the phone and called your friends or family? This is a great way to not only connect with them in a different way, but also avoid staring at your screen having a text conversation when you could just do it over the phone. ive your thumbs a break!
  4. Set a daily screen time limit. If you’re an Apple user, they make it very easy to set a timer that lets you know when your daily screen time is up. Or you could go the old-fashioned way and set a timer yourself. Set it and forget it – and make sure you stick to it when it actually goes off!
  5. Designate a time of day you will stop working/doing homework. Anyone else seems to be checking their email at 11:00 pm at night….? If this sounds like you, designate a time period that you will work or do homework during the day and shut off for the rest of the night. Plus, this will promote a healthy work-life balance that everyone needs.
