Dorm Cooking

As a person, I love to cook and bake, especially when I am stressed. Coming to college and not having access to a kitchen is hard. I am a picky eater and I like to make things the way I like to make them. I like things quick and simple but also reminds me of home.

One of my favorite treats to make at home is homemade rice krispie treats. The best thing about it is that you can make them in your dorm with just a microwave.

Ingredients:

  • Half a stick of butter
  • Half a bag of marshmallows
  • Rice Crispy cereal (you can substitute for any cereal

Supplies:

  • Microwave
  • Bowl (that is microwave-safe)
  • Container to put them  in after to set
  • A spoon

The first step is to grease the container you are putting the treats in the set. My recommendation is to use half a stick of butter to grease. Just rub the butter all around the container till it is greased fully. Put the container to the side and move on to step two.

The next step is to put the butter in the bowl and then put half a bag of marshmallows in with it or until the bowl is full. Be careful the marshmallow does expand in the microwave, so watch carefully. Then put it in the microwave bowl and microwave for a minute. Take it out, stir it in for 30 seconds, and stir again. I only needed to do this but if it needs to melt some more, keep putting less time in the microwave and stir so the marshmallow will not burn. The marshmallows just need to be melted.

The next thing is to go slowly, and in small batches, put in the cereal and stir. You do this till you Are happy with the results of your treats. I prefer mine to be more gooey but others prefer more crunch, so do whatever you like. Also, you can add chocolate and peanut butter to your mix to add more flavor.

Then spread your mixture on the greased container. If you want to add candies or other toppings, this is the time to do it before it sets. Then let the mixture sit in the container for about 5 minutes but I love them fresh from the bowl so it’s up to you.

This is a fun quick recipe that took me 3 minutes to make and less than 10 minutes for me. This is a great recipe to do with roommates or friends right from your door. But most importantly this is a delicious recipe to make that you can be as creative as you want.

So … Bon Appetit
