Red Sox Spring Training Preview: Position Battles, Prospects, and Big Storylines

Liam MacKenzie

Fort Myers – It is that time of year in sports as Spring Training for Major League Baseball is in the air down in the Sunshine State of Florida, as it will take place in the beautiful area of Fort Myers. This is a time in the season that brings storylines to everyone, and with the Boston Red Sox preparing for their 2026 campaign, this spring training will be no different than the others, as it gives them a chance to see how this team will be constructed.

Message Being Brought – Each season, every ballclub has a message or speech that is given, and for Red Sox Manager Alex Cora, his speech is one that was very eye-catching, as it was about “finishing the race”. He talks about how the season is like a marathon, which he stated in a video, “The baseball season is very similar to a marathon,” which goes to show that with the season being 162 games long, it will take a really long, difficult grind to get where they need to be.

Start of Spring Training and the Schedule – The 2026 Spring Training season for the Boston Red Sox got underway with the Pitchers and Catchers reporting to duty on February 10th, 2026, as they took part in the team’s first workout that Tuesday morning. The first exhibition game will take place tomorrow, Friday, February 20th, at JetBlue Park against the Northeastern Huskies before they jump into a 30-plus Grapefruit League game slate, as it will include opponents like their division rivals, the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays. These are a few teams to name that Boston will play, and it will be a good test for the depth that the Red Sox will have for 2026.

Storyline #1: The New Guys on the Block – One of the biggest storylines heading into this Spring Training is what we will see from the new additions in the Boston Red Sox which include Starting Pitcher Ranger Suarez, Starting Pitcher Sonny Gray, Starting Pitcher Johan Oviedo, Starting First Baseman Willson Contreras, Newly Acquired Infielder Caleb Durbin, and Veteran Infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. With people saying that some of these players have got their positions locked in, it doesn’t mean the players don’t have to go into Spring Training and not prove anything, because it is a time to figure out what needs to be worked on and know what has to be done to give this team a chance to win.

Storyline #2: Pitching Rotation and Bullpen – Like every Spring Training, evaluating the Pitchers will be the main priority as they need to bring stability to the defense, so that the team won’t rely heavily on the offense most of the time. Baseball fans/experts know that the pitchers on this ball club, which include the Ace Garrett Crochet, Ranger Suarez, Sonny Gray, and Brayan Bello, all will have a spot on the team, which will set up a great 1-4 random. The big question lies in the number 5 starting spot, as it will be up for grabs, where guys like Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval, Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and free agent pick-up Johan Oviedo will be expected to compete for that role to complete the rotation.

If some of those guys don’t end up getting that number 5 spot, it opens up a spot in the bullpen, which will help for relief purposes. The bullpen will be something to keep an eye on as guys will try to compete for certain roles, along with helping guys who are expected to be in the minors to help them develop during the course of time in Spring Training, so that they can hopefully see the field at Fenway in the near future. People that follow the Red Sox know that the main closer will be Aroldis Chapman in which he is dealing with Father Time, but had an all star season last year and with him heading towards the end of his career, the Red Sox need someone to step up in that closing role as a backup option short term while in terms for the long haul, that one certain player can be the future closer once Chapman’s career is over.

Storyline #3: Top prospects – For every Spring Training, the top prospects go with their ballclub in order to develop with elite talent around them as they hope to be the future of the franchise. Two guys that were mentioned and will be a part of Spring Training are Connelly Early and Payton Tolle, who have debuted for the ball club in 2025, but are looking to compete for opening day roster spots. Some other guys include 2025 first-round draft pick Kyson Witherspoon who was taken 15th overall, Franklin Arias who is a top 15 overall prospect that has been mentioned in trade rumors, but will look to develop himself regardless of where his career will take him, Mikey Romero who was first round pick by the Red Sox in 2022, but dealt with injuries early in his career before he would finally appear fully healthy in 2025, and Jake Bennett who is a 6’6 lefty pitcher acquired from the Washington Nationals as these are just a couple prospects to name.

Storyline #4: Kristian Campbell’s Comeback – Everyone that watched the Red Sox last season will tell people that Kristian Campbell will be someone to keep an eye on as he was a top prospect that made the opening day roster as he off to a very hot start that would later see him get an eight year, $60 million extension, but he would eventually have struggles both at the plate and 2nd base. This would lead to him being sent back down to Triple-A, and now he looks to make a redemption type of run down in Fort Myers to prove that last season was just a hiccup.

Storyline #5: The Outfield Logjam and DH Spot – Having options can have its pros and cons, but with a Red Sox outfield that is in a logjam, it raises questions as to where guys will play. There are 4 starting outfielders that the Red Sox have which include Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Wilyer Abreu which have people question if Duran will play DH as the logical solution to all of this would put Duran at that position barring a trade which has been a theme as of lately, Roman in Left Field, Ceddanne in Center Field, and Wilyer in Right Field.

Another question that comes into play with the DH spot is the Masataka Yoshida dilemma, who is a guy that joined the club in 2023, had a standout postseason in 2025, and has an uncertain path to playing at the DH spot in 2026 with the outfield logjam. It will be crucial to see how Duran and Yoshida fare out this Spring Training, and both will hopefully make an impact on this Red Sox ballclub, or wherever they go if one gets traded to another ball club.

Storyline #6: Rehab Projects – Spring Training for guys that got injured is a part of the baseball season that will aim to help them get back into shape as one guy that will focused on heavily is Tristan Casas who is working his way back from a ruptured patellar tendon that he suffered last May and with Willson Contreras at the first base position, Casas is in a situation where his future with the Red Sox is very uncertain. Other guys who are looking to fight for roster spots in the pitching staff are Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval, who suffered injuries that resulted in them missing the whole season of 2025.

Storyline #7: World Baseball Classic – This year’s Spring Training overlaps with the World Baseball Classic, which is a premier international baseball tournament, and baseball fans around the world will chime in to see the best of the best go at it. The guys that will be playing in it are Garrett Whitlock and Roman Anthony as of most recently for Team USA, Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, and Ranger Suarez for Team Venezuela, Jarren Duran for Team Mexico, Masataka Yoshida for Team Japan, Ceddanne Rafaela for Team Netherlands, Brayan Bello for Team Dominican Republic, Jovani Moran for Team Puerto Rico, Greg Weissert for Team Italy, and Nate Eaton for Team Great Britain.

Being able to balance play time in the World Baseball Classic along with time spent in the Grapefruit League adds uncertainty to how this Spring Training will unfold. For the younger guys, along with guys who are desperate to keep themselves on this roster or just have a job with a ball club, it is a time for them to make the most of their opportunity during this period of time.
Final Thoughts – Red Sox nation along with people who follow baseball, are intrigued to see how this Spring Training goes, as they know this is just more about the warm-ups, it’s a preview for how the season will unfold, from the pitching to the young developing prospects. Tomorrow is when the action gets underway, and everyone will not want to miss out as the games get underway on February 20th at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.
