It’s time to go over the underrated Thanksgiving foods. Part four of the Beacon Roundtable series will cover Thanksgiving foods that deserve more love. The ones who do not get the credit they deserve, the ones who consistently punch above their weight, the ones who need the spotlight on them.
Matt O’Connor – Campus & Culture Editor: Ham
Turkey has always been the go-to for the main Thanksgiving meal, but I’ve always been quite partial to ham. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with turkey, but ham basically checks all of the same boxes. It’s very filling, tastes even better when glazed with some kind of gravy, and puts you to sleep before you can even think about it. I like turkey a lot, but I prefer ham by a pretty wide margin.
Marcus Antonelli – Sports Editor: Ham
Do you get why Turkey is considered my worst now? Ham was introduced to me on Thanksgiving of 2021 and I’ve never looked back. It’s got that solid texture, good tangy flavor and it’s a good base to use when you’re stacking the mix of peas, mashed potatoes, and whatever else on your fork for an all-in-one bite. Call me nuts, but this should be the main course annually on the last Thursday of November.
Pat Casey: Bread Roll
There is a saying in Sports, every locker room needs a locker room guy. It is no different on a dinner plate, The Bread roll is the most underrated Thanksgiving food. The Comradery it has with the other food. The one, two punch it has when you apply butter to it but it can hold up on its own. The ability to clean up the gravy or tomato sauce at the end ties it all together. It is the bread roll no question!
Alena Laurent: Candied Yams
An underrated Thanksgiving food would have to be candied yams. I had never had candied yams until three years ago when my aunt made it one Thanksgiving, but once I did, I realized the potential it carried. I never thought I would enjoy yams in general, but it is the perfect dish to end your Thanksgiving meal on a sweeter note (followed by dessert of course).
Morgan Creighton: Stuffing
Stuffing is typically made with bread, onions, herbs, and seasoning. The seasoning gives the stuffing an excellent flavor. Stuffing is the perfect addition to a Thanksgiving meal.
Scott Logush – Editor-in-Chief: Mac ‘n Cheese
A good mac ‘n cheese, especially a baked mac ‘n cheese, can really tie everything together. Creamy cheese, the texture, the flavor, all of it makes me wonder why this food is not talked about more.
