Beacon Roundtable – Overrated Thanksgiving Foods

Overrated Thanksgiving Food

Scott Logush

Editor-in-Chief

We’re going over the overrated Thanksgiving foods in part three of the Beacon Thanksgiving Roundtable series. These foods are not bad by any means but rather do not live up to the hype. They are ranked too highly in the preseason and regress back toward what true expectations should be when the game starts.

Matt O’Connor – Campus & Culture Editor: Apple Pie

I’ve never really understood the unbridled love for apple pie or pie as a dessert in general. In my family, dessert is considered to be just as important as dinner. My grandmother would always get a carvel ice cream cake and an assortment of delicious cookies. But I don’t really get that same feeling with apple pie. It’s not bad, it’s just a bit too crisp for me personally. Pecan pie is alright though.

Marcus Antonelli – Sports Editor: Green Bean Casserole

Why do we do this? To me, this dish has always looked like puke and is a detriment to the culinary art that is this holiday. Just eat the damn green beans by themself (or with mashed potatoes and gravy maybe). Seeing the heavy cream with the mushrooms and fried onions is an optical stomach ache. I wouldn’t let this monstrosity go near my taste buds, let alone put my digestive system through the pain of understanding what I was thinking if I took a bite of it, and then swallowed it.

Pat Casey: Turkey

It is unquestionably turkey as the most overrated Thanksgiving food at the table. It feels like a chicken that did not get enough love at birth. It is very dry and it needs gravy to have any sort of substance behind it. If it was not for our great pilgrims having only turkey to eat all those years ago. People would laugh when you offer them turkey.

Alena Laurent: Turkey

Although it is a huge component of Thanksgiving, I think that turkey is heavily overrated. My opinion is slightly biased since I’m a pescatarian, but in the few times I had tried turkey, it really wasn’t that great. After the first couple of bites, it just becomes dry and unappetizing, almost as though you keep chewing it and it never fully dissolves. I also know many people who have ham on Thanksgiving instead for this same reason.

Morgan Creighton: Pecan Pie

It is not a good idea to put nuts in dessert, which is why pecan pie is an overrated food. The taste of the pecans detracts from the sweetness of the dessert. The crunchiness of the pecans make this food
difficult to eat.

Scott Logush – Editor-in-Chief: Turkey

Turkey is a B-tier protein at best and is only as hyped as it is because of the Thanksgiving tradition. When in your life would you ever actively choose to have turkey over beef, steak, chicken, ham, or even fish? It is never your first choice for protein and let’s be honest, you actively look to drown this in gravy when you eat at Thanksgiving. If you need to drown it in gravy then why are you so excited about it? Turkey only has name value, he’s the old quarterback that sticks around way too long but the fans want him because you remember the Super Bowl, the playoff runs, and vintage moments of the past but in reality, he simply is not good enough. Sure, you could get a turn-the-clock-back moment once in a while, but there are significantly better options available. Looking at you 2021 Ben Roethlisberger, loved the career but those years were tough.
