The Christmas Movie Countdown Day 9: The Muppet Christmas Carol

Matt O’Connor

It’s Day 9 of our Christmas Movie Countdown! (Apologies for the delay) The Muppets are a staple of pop culture and have spanned throughout multiple generations. They’ve done a variety of movies, but one of their best is an adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This film adapts the source material faithfully, but also gives everything a Muppet based twist.

Released in 1992 and directed by the late Jim Henson’s son, Brian Henson’s directorial debut was The Muppet Christmas Carol. The film follows Gonzo portraying Charles Dickens and his friend Rizzo as they narrate the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. Played by Michael Caine, Scrooge goes through the classic story, which remains the same as many of the other Christmas Carol adaptations, but the majority of the main characters are portrayed by the Muppets. Kermit The Frog plays Bob Cratchit, Old Fezziwig is played by Fozzie Bear, and Jacob Marley is split between the roles of Statler and Waldorf.

Personally, this has always been my personal favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol, as there’s so much charm and creativity on display throughout the film. Sir Michael Caine’s performance as Ebenezer Scrooge is one of if not the most entertaining and authentic performance of the character ever put to screen. The Muppets have always nailed the contrast between being comedic and being emotional, and this film nails that.

The story of a Christmas Carol is and will always be a legendary tale and a staple of the holiday season, and The Muppet Christmas Carol understands that. Brian Henson and the rest of the Muppet team reimagined the story in a whole new way, but still remained faithful to what has come before.
