It’s Day 4 of our Christmas Movie Countdown. Our next stop for this holiday marathon is the first film in one of the most famous long running Christmas movie franchises. It’s been more than 30 years since The Santa Clause released back in 1994, and it still stands out as a comedic and distinctive take on the Christmas film traditions that we’ve come to expect.
The Santa Clause follows Scott Calvin, who works as the marketing director for a toy company who wants his son Charlie to keep believing in Santa. But one night, Scott discovers Santa on his roof. Scott startles Santa, causing him to fall off the roof to his death. A business card then appears instructing Scott to wear Santa’s suit as a protocol if anything were to happen to him. Per Charlie’s request, Scott decides to take up the mantle of St. Nick.
One of the most entertaining aspects of the film is undoubtedly Tim Allen’s performance as Scott Calvin. As the film goes on, Scott begins to act more and more like Santa. His hair turns white, he grows a beard, and he even gets a craving for milk and cookies. The film really delves deep into the humor of the scenario of someone entirely random being chosen to take up the mantle of Kris Kringle.
Even after 30 years, The Santa Clause continues to be a Christmas classic. Although there have been multiple sequels, nothing will ever top the hilarity and heart of the original. That’s 4 days down, and we’ve got plenty of films to watch before the holidays hit!
