Barbie has been a consistent revenue maker that’s never truly gone out of style. Ever since the dolls were first introduced by Mattel in 1959, the franchise has consistently remained as one of the most popular toy brands on the market with over 34 billion dollars in lifetime sales. But beyond that, Barbie has expanded into all forms of entertainment like television, theme parks and a blockbuster film that made over a billion dollars at the box office.
However, the franchise recently found itself swept up in a controversy surrounding Barbie Dream Fest, which was described as the “Ultimate Barbie Fan Event”, Dream Fest was set to go down in Fort Lauderdale from March 27th to March 29th at the Broward County Convention Center. But for those who spent hundreds of dollars for the Barbie experience of a lifetime, the event was nothing short of a nightmare and a total disaster.
Come On Barbie, Where’s The Party?
Barbie Dream Fest was advertised to be nothing but three days of fun and filled to the brim with all things Barbie. The event was put together in a space spanning 100,000 square feet. In addition, numerous celebrities were slated to make appearances including big names like Angel Reese and Serena Williams. It seemed like Dream Fest was everything that a Barbie fan could ever dream of. But no one could’ve predicted how backlash the event would receive.
Customers were promised an “interactive dream house”, but were met with a cardboard cutout of the iconic location propped up on some fake turf. The 80’s roller rink that was advertised ended up being a closed off section of the floor surrounded by fencing. The swag bags that were given out for the event were nothing more than a cheap hairbrush and hand sanitizer with Barbie branding slapped on top. “It’s so empty that you can hear sneakers squeaking on the floor,” one attendant said. In terms of the promised special guests, they did end up appearing at the event, but the influencers who did show up weren’t given much flair in terms of their own designated spaces.
Who Organized This Thing?
While Barbie is owned by Mattel, the event itself is a licensed effort by Mischief Management. Once the event concluded, both companies were bombarded with complaints and negative comments about how the event failed to live up to their expectations. A Mattel spokesperson stated “We are working with Mischief Management, who are managing attendee feedback and issuing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets. We want every fan experience to be an excellent one.”
Dream Fest has been compared to 2024’s “Willy’s Chocolate Experience” debacle, which was a similarly low budget event but was completely unlicensed and made mostly through Generative AI. Despite everything that went wrong, Mattel and Mischief Media seem to be genuinely apologetic towards the guests that spent a pretty penny for the disaster that was Barbie Dream Fest. While something like this will inevitably fade from the public consciousness, Mischief Media still did a fair amount of damage to the Barbie brand that will take time to fully revert.
