Reset in Western New York: Buffalo Bills Part Ways with Head Coach Sean McDermott

Liam MacKenzie

Just 2 days after the Buffalo Bills lost their divisional round playoff game on the road against the Denver Broncos, huge news broke out in the NFL world with the Bills organization making the decision to part ways with head coach Sean McDermott. There was speculation from fans and experts across the league that change would come in Buffalo whether it would be in the front office or on the coaching staff as it would turn out to be that it was Head Coach Sean McDermott’s tenure coming to an end.

McDermott is the second member of the Bills coaching staff to depart in the Bills 2026 offseason after the retirement of Bills Offensive Line Coach Aaron Kromer, which is a huge loss for the Bills coaching staff. Another member of the Bills coaching staff that fans and experts of the NFL believe to head on out of the organization is Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady as he has been brought in by some organizations which include the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, and Las Vegas Raiders for their head coaching vacancies.

With McDermott heading on out, the attention focuses on who will be the next head man of a Bills team trying to get over the hump of a Super Bowl Title with a Superstar Quarterback in Josh Allen. It will be up to Brandon Beane to conduct the search of Buffalo’s next head coach as it was also announced that the Bills organization will be promoting Beane to give him the title of President of Football Operations and General Manager. While Bills owner Terry Pegula has stated that he has “Full faith in and has witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and has confidence in his abilities to lead our organization”, some Bills fans along with other fans and some experts believe that Beane’s tenure should have ended alongside McDermott’s.

Taking a look at time McDermott has spent in Buffalo, he has spent 9 seasons with the team posting a 98-50 record, he took the team to the playoffs eight times with the lone season not making it being Josh Allen’s rookie year in 2018, he led the team to 5 AFC East Titles, and through it all, he was not able to lead Buffalo to a Super Bowl appearance. McDermott ends his time in Buffalo as one of their most recent successful coaches in which he was able to turn around a struggling Bills team from the early to mid 2010’s and now the page turns to who will be the guy that will take Buffalo to bigger heights that will result in the Bills franchise going back to the big game.

In the end, Sean McDermott having to part ways with the Buffalo Bills was because of the unmet expectations of appearing in the big game even though he brought pretty good consistency each season. As the Bills turn the page towards a new chapter, the scrutiny now shifts primarily to the front office, where fans are openly questioning whether leadership decisions have maximized a roster built around Josh Allen in his prime. This next hire not only will define the future of the franchise, but will eventually determine whether the Bills can finally take that final step, or will become another reminder to everyone who loves the game of football about how a team is not able to capitalize on the Super Bowl window.
