NASA Astronauts Return to SpaceX Capsule

On March 18th, 2025. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams and two NASA astronauts safely returned to Earth after spending nine months in the International Space Station.

Both astronauts had originally aimed for an eight-day mission after being launched on June 5th, 2024. Williams and Wilmore completed scientific experiments to explore the boundaries of human endurance and health risks. However, the Boeing Starliner flight faced major technical problems, which caused their extended presence in orbit to be delayed. Helium leaks and propulsion systems led NASA to finally rescue the astronauts after spending 286 days in space.

NASA launched the Crew-9 mission and coordinated with SpaceX in order to facilitate their return. Wilmore and Williams were accompanied by two other astronauts during the process of delaying the mission. The astronauts were finally dropped off from SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule “Freedom” and were splashed down off the coast of Tallahassee Florida at approximately 5:57 pm.

The mission gained political attention with audiences believing that the extended stay was influenced by political considerations. NASA shut down the assumptions by stating that the technical and safety factors were emphasized through the mission’s timeline. Concerns for future human space exploration were raised due to the health risks for long-term human presence.

Following the return, Williams and Wilmore were treated with medical assistance and are now in a 45-day post-mission program in Houston, Texas. The aftermath left them with weightlessness that included muscle atrophy and bone density loss, which affected their physical health and mobility. Their journey was a success in human space exploration and will be returning home in a day or two.
