The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), which was the first women’s professional ice hockey league to pay its players, recently closed its operations on June 29th 2023 after eight seasons. While this might be terrible news for viewers of women’s professional ice hockey, the bad news is currently being balanced out with some good news. On August 29th 2023, a new women’s professional ice hockey league was founded called the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). The PWHL’s inaugural season will take place in 2024 and will feature six league-owned teams scattered across Canada and the United States. The six PWHL teams will be located in Montreal, Quebec, CA; Toronto, Ontario, CA; New York, New York, USA; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Ottawa, Ontario, CA; and Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. The team names will be announced at a later date. Along with the good news of the new league forming, Merrimack College also has something to celebrate. Merrimack College’s very own Dominika Lásková ‘22 was drafted by the PWHL Montreal in the fourth round and she was the 19th overall pick in the league.
