In honor of Earth Day on April 22, this month’s WMCK review highlights three songs that draw attention to the importance of protecting our environment. So, here are the songs to get you started on your musical nature walk:
“Conviction of the Heart” by Kenny Loggins: This song came out in 1991, and Al Gore considers it to be the theme song of the environmental movement. Loggins believes that everyone is connected to nature; he gives this as the reason that humans have a moral responsibility to protect the environment. The life of nature is just as precious as the life of another human being. Once we truly believe this then we will start being able to make progress on protecting our world.
“To the Last Whale” by Crosby and Nash: This song is about the senseless slaughtering of whales. It is directly written to these whales, and is an attempt to reach out and apologize for what humans have done to them. It is one of the saddest and most compelling songs that I have ever heard. It makes you really want to try to do something to help these poor defenseless animals. The line that always hits home for me: “It’s not that we don’t know, it’s just that we don’t want to care.” It is a depressing thought that we know so much about this situation, but we won’t do anything to put an end to it.
“No More Walks in the Woods” by The Eagles: This song is exactly what the title says. This brings a musical reality to the process of deforestation. It has a melancholy feel to it, and it transports the listener into a whole other world, a world where there are no trees and you are standing in this empty forest wondering what has happened.
