What’s Trending: Game of Thrones

“Game of Thrones” is an American fantasy drama television series that made its debut on HBO on April 17, 2011. The show has attracted record numbers of viewers and obtained a wide broad of an active international fan base as well. It’s won numerous awards and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for its four seasons. It has also won many other prestige’s awards such as a Golden Globe Award for best Television Series as well as a Hugo Award for best Dramatic Presentation. The shows creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss successfully pitched the show to HBO in 2006 and two days after the fourth season premiered, HBO renewed Game of Thrones for two more seasons as the fifth season premiered on April 12, 2015.

Before making its way to television, “A Game of Thrones” was the first novel in “A Song of Fire and Ice,” a series of high fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin. First published on Aug. 6, 1996, the novel was a hit of its own winning the 1997 Locus Award as well as being nominated for both the 1997 Nebula and World Fantasy Award. The novel became a New York bestseller and reached #1 on the list in July 2011. The story is set in the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, as the series chronicles the violent dynastic struggles amongst the Noble families who are all battling for control of the Iron Throne. The first couple of seasons covered the rising threat of the impending winter and the legendary creatures and people of the North. It accounts the attempts of the last exiled lineal descendant of the kingdoms overthrown ruling dynasty to reclaim the throne.

About two weeks into the fifth season, many people are buzzing on what has happened and what’s still left to come. Filled with violence, kings, and nudity, “Game of Thrones” is one of the top trending shows and topic of conversation and the show’s fandom was even ranked the most devoted in popular culture by Vulture Magazine in 2012. The third episode of the series airs this Sunday at 9, and for the really dedicated, secret has it the first five episodes of the season have already been leaked to the Internet.
