Vine Is Coming Back (Yes, You Heard That Right)

Matt O’Connor

After originally being shut down back in 2017. Vine is returning in an unexpected way. A new version of the app is being worked on called diVine, with the project being helmed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and longtime Twitter employee Evan “Rabble” Henshaw-Plath. This new app will bring the classic six second videos that Vine was originally known for, and over 100,000 videos will be uploaded to diVine from the original Vine video archive.

Users who originally had old Vine profiles can reclaim their accounts and gain access to their old content. One distinguishing feature that diVine will feature over other social media platforms is that it will outright ban the creation of AI generated content on the platform. DiVine will use a specifically trained algorithm to flag videos created with AI to emphasize how the app will be fueled by content made by real people.

In a press release, Henshaw-Plath discussed how the app would ban AI content by saying “I want to show people that we don’t need to settle for this dystopia,” “The path forward begins with understanding that we are not passive consumers of social media — we are active participants in shaping its future,” As of now, the app is currently going through beta testing.
