The Love Of Food: Rice Crispy Treats

Everyone has heard of the cereal that snaps, crackles, and pops. Mix that with melted gooey marshmallows and you have a treat that will make you smile. It is very easy to go to the store and have already-made rice crispy treats, but making them homemade is half the fun.

I grew up always making them. Personally, I think they taste better homemade and you can also make them the way you like them. Some people like more of a crunch factor, but as for me, I want more marshmallows. By making them yourself you get the option to choose which you prefer better.

This recipe is just three simple ingredients: one stick of butter, one bag of marshmallows, and a box of rice crispy-based cereal. You also don’t only have to use rice crispy-based cereal, you can use any cereal. I’m just more of a traditionalist. Also, if you have any food allergies or food sensitivities you can find many substitutions for all the ingredients to make it suitable for you.

The first step is to get a pan big enough to add at least half of the cereal box into it. Then, place the stick of butter in the pan and let that melt. Once the butter is fully melted, add the whole bag of marshmallows. Stir around so the marshmallows will not burn while they melt. Once the marshmallows have fully melted, take the pan off the heat and start adding the cereal and stir. I recommend adding a little at a time – start with a cup and keep adding till it is at the consistency you would like. Stirring the pot is a feat in itself, but keep fighting until evenly distributed. Then pour and smooth the rice crispy mix on a greased cookie pan.

My mom enjoys adding peanut butter to her rice crispy treats. For this version you can add as much peanut butter as you would like before adding the mixture to the cookie pan. You can let them sit to start forming a more structural shape, but I just love eating it while it’s warm.

This is a quick and easy recipe that you can enjoy all year round! Bon Appétit!
