The heartbreaking news no one wants to hear. Many students left shocked and saddened by the loss of One Direction member Liam Payne.
The famous boy band that rose to fame in 2010, One Direction formed on British X Factor where each member auditioned separately but was then grouped by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger. The band consisted of five members Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Liam Payne. The group stayed together til 2015 when Zayn Malik departed then the remaining members held on a hiatus in 2016. The members all went to do solo careers to this day.
Unfortunately on October 16, 2024, the news of the death of Liam Payne was announced to the public. He was found dead at an Argentina Hotel called, “ Casa Sur Hotel”. He was in Argentina to see the concert of former One Direction singer, Niall Horan. The Argentina
National Prosecutor’s Office stated Payne had jumped from his third-story balcony. Payne’s Hotel photo was released showing the inside of his room. Displaying a mess of drugs used in the room, a broken television screen, and an unfinished glass of wine.
“Everything indicates that the musician was alone when the fall occurred and that he was going through some kind of breakdown as a result of substance abuse,” The Office explains.
The news shocked fans internationally, Liam Payne has stated in a social media post before about his struggle with substance abuse. In a social media post in 2019, he stated he was sober for a year. He shared that his substance abuse was getting better with the help of therapy. To learn his death was during a substance abuse breakdown left many fans heartbroken.
“It’s still hard to believe that he’s dead, you know? I have been listening to One Direction since I was a kid,” Hannah Perham, a senior at Merrimack College explains.
“ It’s just hard to believe that he’s gone, really. I didn’t even know he was struggling with drugs. I guess I missed it but it’s just sad how it happened,” Perham continues.
Many Merrimack female students found the news in disbelief. Many relate the death to how previous generations of fans reacted to the first Beatles’ death. Fans expressed their grievances by playing One Direction songs and showing support to the members by commenting on their Instagram pages. Many also make memorials of the singer. One of the memorials is local at the Boston Common. Merrimack girls on campus also expressed their grievances about the beloved singer.
“ I’ve been listening to One Direction all day. It’s my way of processing his death. I just hope the members are taking care of themselves honestly, They were practically brothers,” Faith Purvis a Senior Merrimack student states.
“ I haven’t been to the memorial in the common but it makes me want to go now. It’s nice to see fans supporting other fans during this time. This was a piece of my and many other people our age, childhood. I remember listening to the Story of my life. It’s different listening to their music now.” Purvis continued.
All the members of the beloved boy band had made personal statements expressing their love and grief over the death of Liam. The One Direction Instagram made a post since their last post in 2020 marking their tenth anniversary.
“ We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone can, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever.
For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.” Signed by Louis, Zayn, Niall, and Harry.
The investigation continues of the singer, and the parents of Liam have visited the Hotel memorial in Argentina.
