The third movie installment of The Divergent Series: Allegiant was released in theaters on Friday March 18. The film, along with Divergent and Insurgent, are based on Veronica Roth’s insanely popular books. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke, and the plot picks right back up from the ending of Insurgent. The story follows Shailene Woodley’s character Tris, her love interest, Four, played by Theo James, her friend Christina (Zoe Kravitz), her brother, Caleb (Ansel Elgort), and Peter (Miles Teller), as they venture outside the walls of Chicago to find out what is out there. In the last movie, the characters and audience members who have not read the books find out that the characters are not the only ones who exist.
Those who have read Roth’s novels have noticed that the films loosely follow the books, which makes it hard to sometimes enjoy the movie as a whole. Audiences were given the chance to follow their favorite characters outside the fence and what they found was shocking. Outside Chicago was a waste land, with toxins that are not good to breathe in. The way the wasteland was set up and how it looked was nothing the audience expected. It was all red and had a desert feel to it, almost like the planet Mars.
As the characters marched on through the wasteland, they walked right up to an invisible force field, and it magically opened. Who opened it? The people who live outside Chicago. The characters soon followed these people back to their base, which is called the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. Everything is more futuristic than the other two movies combined because of the computer generated imagery (CGI).
The plot flowed smoothly. The movie-goers got to see Caleb beg forgiveness to Tris after he betrayed her in the last movie. The audience got to see Tris and Four’s relationship develop; there was some tension because Four could see that the Bureau was not a good place, and Tris did not believe him which caused Four to go home to Chicago and fix things there. He left Tris to find out herself that the place they are in is not the place they thought it was.
Newcomers Jeff Daniels (who plays David) and Bill Skarsgard (who plays Matthew), seemed a little off in the beginning and only one of those two characters ended up being a good guy.
Miles Teller, for sure, stole the show because of his character’s hilarious and sarcastic remarks that had audience members laughing in their seats. Peter seems to be stuck in a pattern as he always goes to the opposing side just to save himself, so it will be interesting to see what his character does in the concluding film.
The film adaptation of Allegiant was stunning and really shined throughout the whole two hours, and it is very much worth seeing.
