The Christmas Movie Countdown Day 17: Miracle On 34th Street

Matt O’Connor

It’s Day 17 of our Christmas Movie Countdown! Our next film on the docket is one that needs no introduction. Miracle On 34th Street is one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time, and we’ll be taking a look at both the 1947 original as well as the 1994 remake. Both versions of the film offer their own distinct takes on certain plotlines and characters and their own viewing experiences.

Right before the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the man who was scheduled to play Santa Claus is caught under the influence. A man named Kris Kringle is hired on the spot to play St. Nick. His excellent performance caused Macy’s to hire him to play Santa again in their New York City store on 34th Street. Kringle quickly becomes beloved by both young children and their parents for his convincing performance as Santa, but he soon finds himself heading down a path of corporate struggles and legal battles.

Both versions of the film go in different directions with certain aspects, with the remake adding much more of a focus on corporate greed and how it affects the Christmas season. Both films also featured a stacked cast, but the stars of the show are Edmund Gwenn (1947) and Richard Attenborough (1994) as Kris Kringle.

No matter which version you prefer, you can’t deny that Miracle On 34th Street is one of the most memorable and influential films for the holiday season. We’ve got quite a few interesting films coming up as we nearing the end of the countdown, so stick around for more!
