The Biggest Trailers Released During the Super Bowl

Matt O’Connor

Super Bowl LVIII took place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada last Sunday between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. It was a close battle, but the Chiefs ultimately took the win in overtime, marking the team’s fourth Super Bowl win and one of only two teams to win back-to-back alongside the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2004. With every Super Bowl, one of the most anticipated aspects of the event is the debut of new trailers for upcoming movies releasing later in the year, and 2024 was no exception. These are the biggest trailers for this year’s up and coming cinema lineup.

Deadpool & Wolverine

Marvel trailers always get people talking, and the excitement for the return of the merc with a mouth is through the roof. Formerly known as simply Deadpool 3, Deadpool & Wolverine brings Ryan Reynolds’s Wade Wilson a.k.a Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, the character existed in an entirely separate universe owned by 20th Century Fox, who owned the film rights to the X-Men characters. But when Disney acquired the company and its properties, the floodgates were opened and Reynolds was secured to make his MCU debut. The second film ended with Wade traveling back in time in order to resurrect his fallen friends. But in the trailer, Deadpool is arrested by the TVA, an organization who previously played a major role in the Marvel Disney + series Loki. From what was shown, it seems like Deadpool will be traveling throughout both the Marvel and Fox multiverses, but he won’t be traveling alone. As the film’s co-lead, Hugh Jackman will be returning to the role of Wolverine after the character’s death in 2017’s “Logan.” We’ve known that Jackman would be a major player in the film for some time now, but this film will mark the first live action appearance of Wolverine’s iconic blue and yellow spandex, something that was missing from all of the character’s previous appearances. In addition to Hugh Jackman, there are rampant rumors that several actors from the Fox X-Men films will reprise their roles in Deadpool and Wolverine, and there’s even a rumor running around that Taylor Swift will join the MCU as the character Dazzler, a hero who has vocal based superpowers. Catch the beginning of a new era for Deadpool and Wolverine when the film releases on July 26th.

Despicable Me 4

Despicable Me currently sits at the highest grossing animated franchise of all time, so it’s no surprise that a fourth film is on the way. Steve Carrell once again returns as the former villain turned secret agent Gru. After they were booted from their secret agent positions in the Anti-Villain-League, Gru and his wife Lucy (played by Kristen Wiig) have been reinstated and assigned to track down a villainous couple, Maxime Le Mal (played by Will Ferrell) and Valentina (played by Sofia Vergara). Although he’s raised three adoptive children, Gru will now be tasked with raising his biological son, Gru Jr., who doesn’t seem to like his father very much. The Super Bowl gave us another sneak peek at this fourth film in the ever profitable franchise. And of course, the Minions are back in action as well. In 2022 when the Despicable Me prequel film Minions: The Rise Of Gru released over the summer, there was a large trend of moviegoers attending screenings of the film decked out with fancy suits and dress, so we’ll see if that trend will repeat when Despicable Me 4 hits theaters on July 3rd.

Wicked: Part One

From director Jon M. Chu and Universal Pictures comes a reimagining of the all time classic The Wizard of Oz. Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba (who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Ariana Grande as Glinda the Good Witch. The film is an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name which originally featured Idina Menzel in the lead role. The musical turned theatrical production tells its own story before the arrival of Dorothy Gale. The film was first announced all the way back in 2012 and is finally releasing after more than a decade in production limbo. Since it’s based on a musical, many of the songs present in the original stage play will make their way over to the big screen, and we got a brief teaser of the film’s new rendition of the iconic song “Defying Gravity”, which has become synonymous with the musical. Wicked is split into two parts with Part One releasing this year on November 27th, and Part Two releasing next year on November 26th.

Twisters

Perhaps the most surprising trailer came in the form of a look at Twisters. The original Twister was released back in 1996, and it’s getting a sequel more than two decades later. The sequel follows Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, who lead a group of storm chasers who come face to face with two deadly tornadoes. There have been many theories surrounding the film concerning the return of Helen Hunt as Jo Harding, the original film’s main protagonist. Her return has been reportedly shot down; But if we’ve learned anything, studios tend to be really bad at keeping exciting cameos and returning appearances underwraps. Twisters will be released on July 19th. July is looking to be a stacked month for films.

A Quiet Place: Day One

John Krasinki’s A Quiet Place has grown into one of the best horror film franchises in recent memory. The first two installments focused on the Abbott family trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland while continuing to be hunted by a mysterious race of extraterrestrial beings.Directed by Michael Sarnoski, this upcoming prequel revolves around the invasion of the Death Angel aliens and explains why the world went quiet. The film will feature a strong cast led by Alex Wolff. Joseph Quinn, and Lupita Nyong’o. The trailer that debuted during the game depicts the unsettling fall of humanity as the aliens leave Earth in disarray. Lupita Nyong’o’s Sam will be forced to give everything if she wishes to survive. Even with this prequel on the way, the franchise won’t be slowing down any time soon as John Krasinski has already confirmed that production on A Quiet Place Part III has already begun and is scheduled to be released in 2025. But before that, hear how it all began when A Quiet Place: Day One releases this year on June 28th.

Knuckles

It wasn’t just movies that got a spotlight during the Super Bowl; We also got our first look at the Paramount + original series Knuckles. Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the biggest names in the video game industry, and the character’s foray into the film world has introduced the franchise to a whole new generation of fans. This series is set between the events of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and focused on the character of Knuckles (played by Idris Elba). In this six episode event, Knuckles will embark on a new quest while training local police officer Wade (played by Adam Pally) to become an Echidna warrior. Interestingly, the trailer for the series was uploaded a few days before the Big Game, but it was still aired during the broadcast nonetheless. Knuckles releases exclusively on Paramount + on April 26th, but that’s not all. Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will also be released this year on December 20th.

Kingdom of The Planet Of The Apes

From director Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brings the series back to the big screen after a seven year hiatus. The original Planet of the Apes premiered in 1968 and told the story of a group of astronauts finding a distant planet where apes are the dominant species and humans are wild and ravenous. After a number of sequels, the series took a turn when it was rebooted in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and this installment marks the fourth film in this series. 300 years have passed since the events of the previous film, and a new leader named Proximus Caesar (played by Kevin Durand) has come to power and abandoned the long established ways of his people. Meanwhile, a young ape named Noa (played by Owen Teague) sets out on a journey to set a new path for both apes and humans alike. In addition, Noa is joined by a young human named Nova (played by Freya Allan) on his journey. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes releases on May 10th.

Inside Out 2

After initially releasing in 2015, Inside Out is finally getting a sequel after all these years. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear must guide Riley through her teenage years, but they’ve got some new emotions on the scene. Maya Hawke voices Anxiety and is the first of several new emotions that will appear in this sequel. The Big Game spot that aired during the Super Bowl gave us another look inside Riley’s ever expanding mind as she deals with the whirlwind of emotions present when playing a competitive sport like hockey. Pixar has always been the gold standard for quality animation, and this film will surely be no different. Inside Out 2 will be released on June 14th.

IF

Once again coming from John Krasinki, IF follows a young girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) finding out that she has the unnatural ability to communicate with IFs, people’s imaginary friends that have been forgotten. Similarly, her neighbor who is simply called The Man Upstairs (played by Ryan Reynolds) shares this ability. The spot that was shown during the game pokes for at the classic comedy series The Office, a series which Kransinski starred in alongside Steve Carell who plays blue, one of the IFs that will be in the film. Krasinski has proven himself to be an immensely talented actor and director, and this fantasy comedy could be quite interesting when it releases on May 17th.

The Fall Guy

Originally an ABC television series that aired during the 1980s, The Fall Guy is now being revised as a theatrical film with an all-star cast. The film stars both Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the leading roles, two actors that gained a massive following last year due to their prominence in the two biggest films of 2023, with Ryan Gosling playing Ken in Barbie, and Emily Blunt playing Kitty Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. In this new movie adaptation of the TV series, aging stuntman Colt Seavers (played by Gosling) finds himself thrust into an investigation into the disappearance of his fellow actor Tom Ryder(played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) after he vanished on the set of a new film being directed by Colt’s ex-girlfriend Jody Moreno (played by Blunt). The film is being directed by David Leitch, who also directed Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train. Funnily enough, the star of the television show Lee Majors will be making an appearance in the film as well. The Fall Guy will be released on May 3rd.

Kung Fu Panda 4

The first three Kung Fu Panda films are regarded as some of the most creative and entertaining animated films of all time, and the hype for the fourth installment in the series continues to grow. When a mysterious new shapeshifting enemy known as the Chameleon (played by Viola Davis) makes herself known, the newly crowned Spiritual Leader Po (played by Jack Black) must set out on a quest to find a new Dragon Warrior alongside an unlikely partner in Zhen (played by Awkwafina). The big selling point of this fourth entry is the return of the previous villains of the franchises, most notably Tai Lung (played by Ian McShane). Kung Fu Panda 4 punches its way into theaters next month on March 7th.

Monkey Man
The Super Bowl’s final big trailer came in the form of a sneak peek at Dev Patel and Jordan Peele’s Monkey Man. The film stars Dev Patel as Kid, who works as a member of a secret underground fight club. Fueled by a desire for revenge, Kid vows to exact vengeance upon the corrupt leaders who were responsible for the death of his beloved mother. Along with Patel in the director’s chair, horror director and connoisseur Jordan Peele served as a producer for Dev Patel’s debut theatrical release. The film will have its premiere during the South by Southwest film festival on March 11th. But don’t worry, you can still watch Monkey Man when it releases in theaters on April 5th.
