Never Count Them Out: Boston Red Sox Rally for 75th Win of the Season in Extra-Inning Walk-Off Thriller

Boston, MA – The final game of August was nothing short of amazing for the Boston Red Sox. In a wild, high-scoring battle featuring a late comeback, extra-inning drama, and a walk-off finish, Boston defeated the Seattle Mariners 9-8 to secure its 75th win of the season.

The victory provided a memorable ending to the month for the Red Sox, who finished August with a 17-12 record. After entering the ninth inning trailing by a run and having notably struggled throughout the season when falling behind by three or more runs, Boston once again proved why they should never be counted out.

Before the game even began, however, the Red Sox received difficult news regarding first baseman Willson Contreras. Contreras was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain suffered during Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees, with Mickey Gasper recalled to take his place on the roster.

An Offensive Battle Takes Shape – The game developed into a back-and-forth offensive battle, with both teams delivering important hits throughout the afternoon. Seattle held an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning when Cal Raleigh launched a solo home run to left field, his 20th home run of the season.

While 20 home runs would represent an impressive total for many players, the milestone comes during what has been a difficult season by Raleigh’s standards. After launching 60 home runs last season, the Mariners catcher has experienced a significant drop in production, making his seventh-inning blast an important moment in Seattle’s attempt to pull away.

Boston refused to let the deficit become insurmountable, however. Trevor Story helped keep the Red Sox within striking distance in the eighth inning, delivering a two-run double to cut the deficit and set the stage for an unforgettable finish.

Alec Gamboa Delivers in the Ninth – Trailing 8-7 entering the ninth inning, the Red Sox turned to Alec Gamboa to keep Seattle from adding to its lead. The Boston reliever faced immediate trouble after Dominic Canzone led off the inning with a triple.

Despite the early threat, Gamboa settled in and retired Julio Rodríquez, Cal Raleigh, and Josh Naylor to strand Canzone and keep the deficit at just one run. His ability to escape the inning without allowing a run gave Boston’s offense one final opportunity to extend the game.

Boston Finds the Equalizer – Roman Anthony immediately gave Boston life in the bottom of the ninth, lining a triple sharply to center field to put the tying run just 90 feet away with nobody out. Suddenly, the pressure had shifted back toward Seattle.

After Boston continued to battle through the inning, Ceddanne Rafaela delivered a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Anthony home and tied the game at 8-8. The Red Sox had erased the deficit and forced extra innings in dramatic fashion.

Aroldis Chapman Shuts the Door – With the game tied heading into the 10th inning, Boston called upon Aroldis Chapman to handle the pressure. The veteran closer delivered a scoreless frame, recording two strikeouts and preventing Seattle from capitalizing on its extra-inning opportunity.

Chapman’s shutdown performance gave the Red Sox a chance to complete the comeback in the bottom half of the inning. Boston was now just one big moment away from ending August in unforgettable fashion.

This Story Comes With a Plot Twist – The Red Sox faced former Boston bullpen arm Cooper Criswell in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the drama quickly intensified. Seattle intentionally walked both Caleb Durbin and Jarren Duran, loading the bases and setting the stage for Trevor Story.

And what a plot twist it turned out to be. After injuries and inconsistency raised questions about whether Story could return to the form he displayed during the 2025 season, the veteran shortstop delivered one of his biggest moments of the year.

Story lined a walk-off single sharply to center field, bringing home the winning run and sending Fenway Park into celebration. For a player whose ability to return to his previous form had been questioned following his injury, the moment served as another reminder of the impact Story can have when the Red Sox need him most.

A Perfect Way to End August – Boston’s 75th win of the season was not easy, but it may have been one of its most memorable. From Gamboa’s crucial ninth inning and Chapman’s shutdown performance in extra innings to Rafaela’s game-tying sacrifice fly and Story’s walk-off heroics, the Red Sox received contributions from all over the roster.

The victory also provided a fitting conclusion to a productive month, as Boston finished August with a 17-12 record. If the final game of the month was any indication, the Red Sox enter September with momentum and the same message they have continued to deliver all season: never count them out.
