With five games remaining in the Merrimack College Women’s Softball team’s season, the team is currently sitting at 20-21. This record may not indicate what this team could accomplish come tournament time. Being almost the most consistent .500 team you can possibly be, this team has more to offer than their record is showing.
To start off, this team is 6-4 in their last 10 games with five games remaining. The team has Franklin Pierce coming to town over this final stretch, who is 9-27 this season. If they can get the two game sweep there, then we’re looking at an even hotter 8-4 team going into the final three games against No. 17 Southern New Hampshire University. If the team can win at least one of those three games, they walk into the playoffs with nine wins in their last fifteen contests.
Another reason I am so up on this team is that this offense can spark at any point. This team loves dropping bunts, they love stealing and they love pinch running. The women’s softball team is built around speed and small ball. When your leadoff hitter who can drop down a bunt when the third baseman is playing next to the pitcher and and still beat it out, you’re looking good. By no means will this team drop dingers on you. Six total home runs for the Warriors so far this season is definitely something other teams will notice. But what they’ll have to deal with is the consistent hitting of Lucy Colarusso and Abigail Amato. Colarusso hitting at MVP status with a .351 batting average and 39 hits. While Amato is sitting pretty with a .330 batting average and 33 hits.
This team is extremely solid defensively. They’ve recorded 36 total errors all season and this can definitely help lead to great play in the playoffs if they can get the bats going. If this team hits like they can, they should be in contention to win the Northeast-10 Championship, no question. They have the pitching, they have the defense, they just need the offense to come alive. They gotta go small ball at this time of the year to create their own runs. Bunt people over, hit and run, steal, pretty much you are in desperation mode so it’s time to pull out every trick in the book.
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s playoff time. You have to find any possible way to score a run because with this pitching one run could be the game.
