Merrimack Men’s Lacrosse is looking to dominate the American East Conference

Michael McNamara

North Andover MA, The Warriors season is off to a hot start in the American East Conference. Currently 2-0, they are looking to tally up another win on Saturday against Long Island University. With 8 seniors and 7 graduate students, the returning veteran roster realizes their potential for this season now being eligible for the National tournament.

The Warriors are preparing heavily for this week’s matchup against LIU despite the difficulties of a snow day and cold weather.

Senior FOGO (face-off get off) #25 Karl Sutter emphasized the team’s focus on self-improvement, even following their recent win against Sacred Heart. “There were a lot of minor mental mistakes that could have been game-costly. We’re committed to addressing these issues by watching a lot of film,” shared Sutter.

In the first game against Bucknell, Sutter showcased his skills by scoring two goals. It’s not too often a FOGO position has multi-goal games due to their specific role on the field.

Sutter comments “Being a face-off guy can be a tough spot sometimes because your expectations are to really set the tone, so both goals being in the second and third quarter helped bring some fire to the offense”. Sutter mentions he also relies on the great chemistry between his wings to help get the job done including seniors #44 Whyatt Carr, #32 Joey Jorgenson, and #16 Aiden Glover.

The Warriors transitioned to division one in 2020 and since have battled against top-tier teams like Duke, Albany, and Bryant. “I feel like almost every team overlooks us and many of us coming into Merrimack are underrated recruits. Everyone has a chip on their shoulder and is motivated to win” said Sutter.

The Warriors are chasing a conference championship and plan to get the job done one game after another. By doing so, they have a chance to compete in the NCAA Division One National Tournament for the first time.
