On Friday, April 8, the class of 2018’s class council put on the event “Merrimack Idol.” This is the second year that this amusing competition took place. The class council uses this event as a fundraiser for the class to partake in activities such as Junior Formal, senior formal event. and many others. Sophomores Danielle Morin (Class Representative) and Joel DiMambro (Vice President) hosted the singing event for their second time. Morin said, “Joel and I had a blast doing it last year. We both knew that we were both comfortable on stage, and, and we knew that we worked really well together.”
There were many talented singers onstage as well as singers who wanted to receive laughs from the audience. There were a total of fourteen contestants, and only five moved on to the second round.
Many students played their own instruments such as piano, guitar, and ukulele. There were also some duets in the mix. Sophomore Courtney Carrozzo said, “I think some of the acts that did it just for fun should have not [moved on to the second round] so some of the more serious contestants could have sung again.”
Sophomore Sarah Casey sang “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, and the audience started clapping along to the song. Sophomore Emily Bertolami who sang “Landslide” by The Dixie Chicks also had a lively crows. During Bertolami’s performance, the audience put their phone flashlights on and started waving them back and forth.
Another contestant was sophomore Kelly O’Dea who sang “Hallelujah.” It was O’Dea’s first time competing in Merrimack Idol. She explained, “I attended last year and all I could think about was how much I wanted to be up there [on stage]. I performed a lot in high school and it’s something I really missed.”
The winner of the competition was freshman Nick Olszewski. He sang “A Drop in the Ocean” by Ron Pope for the first round and played the piano as well. For round two, he played “Imagine” by John Lennon.
The Class Council of 2018 hopes to continue with this event in years to come.
