It’s that time of year again. The dark and blistering cold days of winter are upon us and you’re probably wishing summer was just around the corner. Instead of thinking of the season as a miserable time of the year, spice up your winter break, Christmas, or New Year’s Eve with a few of these ideas to get you in the holiday spirit.
Living on the edge: Boston Common is one of the oldest parks in the country and has year-round activities for all ages. Ice skating on Frog Pond is a fun way to get outside and get some exercise, even in the cold. Admission is based on height and everyone under 58 inches gets in for free. Enjoy beautiful scenery by Beacon Hill with family and friends.
Death by chocolate: The Taza Chocolate Bar Factory in Somerville offers tours seven days a week. A delicious and unique way to keep warm, guests can tour the factory where Mexican tradition is kept alive in grounding cacao beans into rich, sweet chocolate. At the end of the tour, pick up some chocolate or a delectable cup of hot cocoa to get into the Christmas spirit.
Classic tradition: The Nutcracker, performed live at the Boston Opera House, runs until Dec. 31. This classic story will appeals audiences of all ages, immersing them into the magical world of sugar plum fairies, dancing snowflakes, and lively toy soldiers.
Light it up: Blink! is a free light and sound show offered at Faneuil Hall throughout the month of December. Experience the breathtaking performance of 350,000 LED lights dance to classic holiday tunes in the marketplace center.
The city never sleeps: First Night, a New Year’s celebration at Copley Square, is a fantastic way to ring in the New Year. It’s free and offers events starting at 6p.m., including performances, ice sculptures, light displays, and fireworks that end the night to start off 2017.
