If you haven’t had the opportunity to check out the O’Brien Center for Student Success, don’t waste another minute to do so. The staff strongly encourages every student to stop by and learn how beneficial the Center can be as we inch towards graduation. The O’Brien Center is a full service career development center that prepares students for the 21st Century workforce. The O’Brien Center is not only for upperclassmen but freshman and sophomores as well. The O’Brien Center assists students in locating internships and jobs as well as helping undecided students to select majors based on interests and skills. The center focuses on building a foundation of career preparation and learning important competencies for both life and work. Students are assigned a Career Advisor based on their major, who works with them throughout their time at Merrimack. Whether it’s the construction of strong resumes, finding and preparing you for positions through On-Campus Recruiting, or learning how to conduct yourself professionally during an interview, the O’Brien Center helps with it all.
It is a statistical fact that 74% of employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience acquired through a co-op or internship (Nace2014). 98% of the Class of 2013 were employed, in graduate school, or participating in a year of service; 61% participated in co-ops or internships and of those students, 29% were offered full time jobs as a result of their co-op or internship. The O’Brien Center for Student Success provides students numerous career-building tools such as Advantage, an online recruiting system that allows employers to post experiential learning opportunities and job positions in one place. By logging into Advantage students are able to look at full-time employment, internship and co-op positions from over 3,000 employers. With over 160 internships posted, students are given an array of opportunities to apply for.
There are over 300 employers on campus each year actively involved in career fairs, panels, on-campus interviewing and classroom presentations. Employers such as Putnam Investments, Kraft Sports Group, Raytheon, Wells Fargo, ESPN, American Cancer Society, Pfizer, Inc. and State Street Corporation all have hired students after graduation and for internships. The O’Brien Center for Student Success also organizes programs such as the Six Week Career Series which provides students with insights on professional development while sharpening student’s minds for employer engagement. Another great tool offered is InterviewStream, available 24/7, this serves as an audio and visual mock interview which allows students to record and review their responses. It’s a great tool for students to take advantage of because it helps to build confidence and allows students to acclimate themselves to the interviewing process. Students can also have their Career Advisor review their InterviewStream response, and then request a mock interview.
O’Brien Center’s Ask An Employer is coming up on Wednesday, November 12 from 10:00am – 1:00pm in Mendel Lobby. This event will give students in Engineering & Computer Science/IT the opportunity to meet with employers such as iRobot, Fidelity Investments, Weston & Sampson, Teradyne, and HDR. Students will be able to meet the company representatives and ask questions regarding their industries in a casual environment.
No matter what your circumstances are, the O’Brien Center for Student Success will be able to guide you in the right direction and will work with you to ensure you are prepared for success with each opportunity you encounter.
