Dyersville, IA – If you build it, they will come. For the Boston Red Sox, those famous words from the 1989 film Field of Dreams will take on a new meaning in 2027.

Major League Baseball announced that the Red Sox will face the Kansas City Royals in the 2027 Field of Dreams Game on Aug. 12 in Dyersville, Iowa. The matchup will give Boston an opportunity to play a regular-season game at one of the most recognizable sites in baseball.

From Fenway to the Cornfields – For an organization with more than a century of history, the Red Sox are no strangers to baseball’s biggest stages. Fenway Park has become synonymous with Boston baseball, from the Green Monster to the iconic Pesky Pole.

But in August 2027, the Red Sox will trade the historic streets of Boston for the quiet cornfields of Iowa. The unique setting will provide the franchise with a chance to add another memorable chapter to its long history.

The Field of Dreams Game has become one of Major League Baseball’s most unique regular-season showcases. Boston’s matchup with Kansas City will give the Red Sox their first opportunity to participate in the event.

A Dream Setting for Baseball’s Past – The Field of Dreams site is about as different from Fenway Park as it gets. Instead of thousands of fans packed into a historic urban ballpark, players will step onto a field surrounded by the Iowa countryside.

The event was inspired by the iconic 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner. The film helped turn the Iowa baseball field into a symbol of nostalgia, family and the connection between baseball and generations of fans.

The Field of Dreams Game debuted in 2021, when the Chicago White Sox defeated the New York Yankees 9-8 in a back-and forth thriller. The game ended dramatically when Tim Anderson hit a walk-off two-run home run into the cornfields, giving Chicago the victory and providing one of the most iconic moments in the event’s history.

The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds followed in 2022, with the Cubs earning a 4-2 victory in the second edition of the event. Afterward, the MLB showcase went on hiatus while work continued on a permanent ballpark at the site.

The event returned to Dyersville in 2026, when the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-1. Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs, while Philadelphia received a strong pitching performance from Aaron Nola in the latest chapter of the Field of Dreams tradition.

Now, Boston will become the next team to take the field in Dyersville. The Red Sox will join the Royals in bringing Major League Baseball back to one of the sport’s most recognizable settings.

A Potential Labor Roadblock – There is, however, one major question hanging over the 2027 MLB season: will there actually be a full season to begin with?

The current Major League Baseball collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association expires on Dec. 1, 2026. The two sides have already begun negotiations, meaning the possibility of a work stoppage is something baseball will have to monitor heading into the 2027 season.

A lockout would not automatically mean the Field of Dreams Game would be canceled. However, if a labor dispute stretches into the 2027 season and causes games to be postponed or canceled, MLB could eventually be forced to adjust its schedule, potentially putting the matchup on August 12th in jeopardy.

The timing of the game could work in its favor if an agreement is reached before the season begins. Because the Red Sox and Royals are scheduled to meet in August, MLB would have more flexibility to preserve the matchup than it would with an event scheduled during the opening weeks of the season.

Still, the uncertainty surrounding the next CBA adds an intriguing subplot to an event that is more than a year away. For now, the game remains scheduled, but its ultimate status could depend on what happens at the negotiating table this offseason.

Boston’s Field of Dreams Moment – Assuming the labor situation does not interfere, the Red Sox will have an opportunity to create a moment that could live alongside some of the franchise’s most memorable games. There will be no Green Monster, Fenway Park bleachers or familiar Boston skyline.

Instead, the Red Sox will take the field in Dyersville, surrounded by cornfields and one of the most recognizable landscapes in baseball. It will be a setting designed to celebrate the sport’s history, nostalgia and connection between generations of fans.

And perhaps fittingly, the words that made the movie famous will once again ring true: If you build it, they will come.

In 2027, the Red Sox will come to the Field of Dreams. If everything goes according to plan, Boston will have its own opportunity to make baseball history in the cornfields of Iowa.
