When you walk into McQuade Library, you will first see a display in remembrance of the Holocaust. But why? This display is to remember Kristallnacht-Holocaust.
“The Courage to Remember: The Holocaust 1933-1945” is put on by the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations department on campus. The information will be on display in the main lobby of the library until Nov. 18.
Kristallnacht means “night of crystal” and is also referred to as the Night of Broken Glass. The Night of Broken Glass refers to the violence in Germany during the time of the Holocaust, specifically on Nov. 9 and 10, 1938, when glass covered the streets from various acts of violence.
According to The Simon Wiesenthal Center, “For only informed, understanding, and morally committed individuals can prevent such persecution from happening again.”
Merrimack’s display in the library is presented to show remembrance to this time and the violence that occurred. On display are history of the events, facts, and books library-goers are welcome to check out.
In addition, there was an event at the Temple Emanu-El of Haverhill on Nov. 15 for prayer and remembrance.
