“Nick Dunne, you’re probably the most hated man in America right now. Did you kill your wife, Nick?” That’s how Nick started his day every morning since the disappearance of his wife.
“Gone Girl,” based on the novel by New York Times Bestseller Gillian Flynn, is mysterious, intriguing, and guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to the screen. Entertainment Weekly called the novel, “the rare page-turner that balanced beautiful writing, breathless pacing, and booby-trap plot twists that landed with the brass-knuckle force of a sucker-punch.” Nick and Amy, played by Academy Award Winner Ben Affleck and English actress Rosamund Pike, are exactly that- twisted. They are one very peculiar couple.
Nick and Amy, married for five years, have a nice house in a small town in Missouri, Ben owns a bar with his sister Margo, and Amy is…well, Amy. Nick wakes up on their fifth wedding anniversary and starts his day like any other. He goes out, a little down on the beaten path, and comes back to his home to find glass shattered all over the living room floor, and the coffee table pushed over with Amy gone. Nick’s original plans when he got home that morning were to divorce Amy, not to go on a scavenger hunt for her.
Amy is gone and no one at all knows where she is. Not Nick, not her parents, no one. She disappears off the face of the earth and once the police and the media are involved, the public can’t help but blame Nick for the sudden disappearance of his wife. The police have proof that Nick could have done it, but the detective doesn’t want to believe that he would do such a thing, until they find the words written inside Amy’s diary about her so-called beloved husband. “This man may truly kill me.” Of course, the good guy gets all the blame. Bye-bye, Nick Dunne.
Eventually, Nick finds a secret stash of all his favorite things that he didn’t buy (go figure) and learns that Amy has set him up and faked her death. With everyone against him besides his lawyer and his loving twin sister, Nick must only hope that he can wait for Amy to come home- and does just that, all while being scolded by the entire nation.
Affairs and amazing Amy. Blood and (maybe) babies. Money and murder. Directed by David Fincher, “Gone Girl” will blow your mind. Not only is it addictive, but it is for sure an attention grabber that will leave you wanting more.
