Drake Maye Will be Fine, Hopefully

Ryan Laws

The 2026 New England Patriots have had a less-than-ideal start to their campaign, coming off a surprise Super Bowl appearance; all summer, the goal was to build on that with similar results. Shiny new offensive weapons in AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs only raised the bar for the Patriots to come out rocking in September.

However, in 2 of the 3 games New England has played, they’ve been the ones getting rocked. All fingers are pointing to third-year quarterback Drake Maye.

Through 3 weeks, Maye has thrown just 1 touchdown, which was back in week 1 to Eli Raridon; on the other side of the stat, he has thrown 6 interceptions and 2 fumbles.

I’m not here to sugarcoat things; he hasn’t looked great, and nearly all of the turnovers are his fault, but why are we so quick to forget all that Drake Maye accomplished just ONE season ago?

7 months ago, Drake Maye almost won Most Valuable Player in the league; he lost by one first-place vote. 3 days later, Maye almost won the Super Bowl, one of the toughest mountains to climb in all of sports.

I completely understand that the NFL is a results-based league; furthermore, it’s a “what have you done for me lately, not in the past” league. But can we have some patience?

New England’s QB1 is still only 24 years old in his third year in the league! He’s not going to be flawless; 1-2 against Seattle and Jacksonville, two of the best teams in the league, I’m totally fine with that!

Sure, it’s going to be a tough bounceback spot in Buffalo this week; they still have a sour taste in their mouth after New England upset them on their home turf last year, and Josh Allen is the best quarterback in all of football. But let’s hold our heads high and be positive about Drake Maye rising to the occasion and putting on a stronger performance in week 4, hopefully making the rest of the season look brighter.

So everyone, let’s just take a deep breath and say it with me:

“Drake Maye is still good, Drake Maye is still great,

I don’t care how bad he plays, for Drake, I will wait.”

Thank you, and we are on to Buffalo, Drake.
