Back in the Fold: New England Patriots Re-Sign Ben Brown, Sign Erick Hunter

Liam MacKenzie – Sports Editor/Treasurer

Foxborough, MA – The New England Patriots made a pair of roster moves on the first day of September, bringing back offensive lineman Ben Brown while also signing linebacker Erick Hunter. Brown’s return came shortly after the Patriots released him, making the move one that quickly caught the attention of fans.

Brown is Back – Brown’s release had Patriots fans questioning the front office, especially given the timing of the decision and the value he had provided as an offensive line depth piece. However, the release was ultimately a purely logistical and procedural move, clearing the way for the Patriots to make the corresponding roster adjustments.

Rather than signaling that New England was moving on from Brown, the transaction opened the door for the team to bring him right back into the fold. His re-signing gives the Patriots another familiar face and adds valuable depth along the offensive line.

A New Addition in Hunter – While Brown returned to the organization, the Patriots also added Erick Hunter to their roster on September 1. Hunter gives New England another young defensive player as the team continues to build depth and evaluate its options heading into the regular season.

Hunter will have an opportunity to compete for a role within the Patriots’ defense and contribute on special teams. His addition also gives the coaching staff another player to evaluate as the team prepares for the challenges of the upcoming season.

The Bigger Picture – The quick turnaround involving Brown shows how much movement can occur behind the scenes when NFL teams manage their rosters. What initially appeared to be a surprising release ultimately proved to be more of a procedural transaction than an indication that the Patriots had lost interest in Brown.

For the Patriots, the moves allow the organization to retain a player it clearly still values while adding another piece to the defense. Brown’s return should also provide some reassurance to fans who were questioning why the team had released him in the first place.

September Brings More Changes – With September officially underway, the Patriots are continuing to make the final adjustments to their roster before the regular season. Every move can have an impact on the team’s depth chart, special teams units and overall roster construction.

Brown now gets another opportunity to establish himself in New England, while Hunter begins his own chapter with the Patriots. As the team moves closer to opening day, both players will look to turn opportunities into meaningful roles.
