Foxborough, MA – Just one day after finalizing and announcing their initial 53-man roster, the New England Patriots continued making changes. On August 31, New England claimed tight end Cameron Latu from the Philadelphia Eagles and linebacker Darius Muasau from the New York Giants off waivers.
The moves demonstrate that even after reaching the NFL’s 53-man roster limit, the Patriots were still looking for opportunities to improve their team. To make room for the two additions, New England was forced to make two corresponding moves.
Adding Another Option at Tight End – Latu arrives in New England as another addition to the Patriots’ tight end room. The former Alabama standout has spent time with multiple NFL organizations and now receives another opportunity to establish himself at the professional level.
His addition gives New England additional depth at the position while potentially providing another contributor on special teams. With the regular season approaching, Latu will look to quickly make an impression with his new team.
Muasau Bolsters the Linebacker Room – Muasau gives the Patriots another option at linebacker after spending the first portion of his NFL career with the New York Giants. The former UCLA standout brings experience to New England’s defense and adds further competition to the linebacker room.
The addition could prove particularly valuable for a Patriots team continuing to build depth throughout its roster. Muasau will now have the opportunity to compete for a role in New England’s defensive rotation and on special teams.
Two Veterans Released to Make Room – To make room on the 53-man roster for Latu and Muasau, the Patriots released veteran linebacker K.J. Britt and center Ben Brown. Both players had initially survived New England’s roster cuts before becoming casualties of the team’s continued roster adjustments.
Brown’s release, in particular, was met with disappointment and concern from some Patriots fans. Many viewed the veteran center as valuable interior offensive line depth, making his departure a surprising development just one day after New England announced its initial 53-man roster.
