A Return to Glory: Harwich Captures the Cape League Crown

Harwich, MA – The Harwich Mariners are Cape Cod Baseball League champions once again. After navigating a challenging postseason and defeating the defending champion Bourne Braves in the Championship Series on August 11, 2026, Harwich has climbed back to the top of the mountain.

Led by manager Steve Englert, the Mariners put together a championship run that featured dominant stretches, close games and a dramatic comeback in the Championship Series. Harwich’s latest title also adds another chapter to its growing postseason history against Bourne.

A Strong Start to the Postseason – Harwich entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the East Division, but the Mariners quickly showed they were ready to make a deep run. They opened the postseason against the Brewster Whitecaps and took Game 1 by a 4-0 score.

The Mariners followed that performance with a dramatic 6-5, 10-inning victory in Game 2. The sweep sent Harwich into the next round with momentum and an undefeated postseason record.

Another Sweep Sends Harwich to the Finals – Harwich continued its run against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the East Division Finals. The Mariners took Game 1 by a 12-9 score before completing the sweep with a 7-6 victory in Game 2.

With four consecutive postseason victories, Harwich earned its spot in the Championship Series. Standing between the Mariners and the championship was a familiar opponent: the mighty Bourne Braves.

Game 1: Bourne Strikes First – Unlike 2024, The Championship Series opened with Bourne taking the early advantage. The Braves defeated Harwich 7-3 after overcoming a 3-2 deficit and scoring three runs in the sixth inning.

The loss immediately put the Mariners in a difficult position. Bourne needed only one more victory to repeat as champions, while Harwich had to win the final two games to bring the trophy back to Harwich.

Game 2: Harwich Answers With a Shutout – Facing elimination at Doran Park, the Mariners delivered when they needed it most. Harwich defeated Bourne 1-0 in Game 2 behind a dominant pitching performance, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3.

The game was decided by a single run, but Harwich’s pitching made it stand up. The Mariners kept Bourne off the scoreboard and sent the series back to Whitehouse Field with the Cape League championship hanging in the balance.

Game 3: The Mariners Finish the Job – With the season and championship on the line, Harwich came out ready in Game 3. The Mariners built a 4-1 advantage before Bourne attempted to mount a comeback.

The Braves eventually cut the deficit to 4-2, but Harwich’s pitching staff held firm over the final innings. The Mariners closed out the 4-2 victory, winning the Championship Series two games to one and officially reclaiming the Cape League crown.

Smolinski Leads the Way – Ty Smolinski, a Kansas State shortstop, was at the center of Harwich’s championship campaign, with his outstanding season earning him the Cape Cod Baseball League MVP award. The Mariners consistently relied on his production throughout the season, and he continued to make an impact when the postseason arrived.

Smolinski also came through in the championship-clinching Game 3, contributing an important RBI during Harwich’s 4-2 victory. His MVP season and championship run made him one of the defining players of the Mariners’ return to the top.

Englert Outduels Landers – Behind the Mariners’ championship run was manager Steve Englert, who guided Harwich through the postseason and ultimately past Bourne. On the opposite side, the Braves were led by manager Scott Landers, creating another compelling managerial matchup with the Cape League championship on the line.

Englert and the Mariners ultimately had the final say. Harwich’s ability to recover from the Game 1 loss and win the final two games allowed the Mariners to take down Landers and the Braves and reclaim the championship.

Bourne Can Be Beaten – Harwich’s championship also sends a message to the rest of the Cape League, particularly the West Division. Bourne has established itself as one of the league’s premier postseason teams, but the Mariners have now proven twice that the Braves can be beaten when the stakes are highest.

The 2026 Championship Series marked the second time Harwich has defeated Bourne for the Cape League crown in three seasons. The Mariners previously defeated the Braves in the 2024 Championship Series, giving Harwich another championship victory over Bourne when the ultimate prize was on the line.

A Message to the West – For the teams in the West Division, Harwich’s championship provides a clear reminder that Bourne is not unbeatable. The Braves remain one of the Cape League’s most dangerous postseason opponents, but Harwich has now shown that it knows how to beat them when everything is on the line.

Twice in three seasons, the Mariners have stood across from Bourne with a championship at stake and walked away victorious. That gives Harwich another signature postseason victory and sends a message to every team looking to climb the mountain next summer.

Back on Top of the Mountain – The road to the championship was anything but easy. Harwich swept its way through the first two rounds, suffered a Game 1 loss to Bourne and then responded by winning two straight elimination games to capture the title.

Led by MVP Ty Smolinski and manager Steve Englert, the Mariners found a way to finish the job against Landers and the mighty Braves. Harwich has climbed the mountain once again, reclaimed the Cape League crown and returned to the top of the Cape.
