Cleveland, OH – On August 21, 2026, Nick Chubb called it a career, announcing his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons. The four-time Pro Bowl running back shared the news on social media at age 30, closing the book on a career that made him one of the most respected running backs of his generation.
Chubb said he had known for some time that retirement was approaching but was finally ready to share the decision publicly. He wanted to finish his career healthy and on a winning team, something he accomplished during his final season with the Houston Texans.
From Athens to the NFL – Before becoming an NFL star, Chubb established himself as one of the greatest running backs in Georgia football history. The Bulldogs standout finished his college career with 4,769 rushing yards and 44 total touchdowns, helping Georgia reach the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Chubb’s path to the NFL was not without adversity, as he suffered a major knee injury during his sophomore season at Georgia. Despite that setback, he continued to build his reputation as one of the country’s toughest and most productive backs before entering the 2018 NFL Draft.
A Star Is Born in Cleveland – The Cleveland Browns selected Chubb with the 35th overall pick in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He immediately made an impact, rushing for 996 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie while establishing himself as a centerpiece of Cleveland’s offense.
Chubb’s best stretch came from 2019 through 2022, when he recorded four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and earned four straight Pro Bowl selections. His 2022 campaign was particularly impressive, as he rushed for a career-high 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns while earning second-team All-Pro honors.
A Cleveland Legend – Over seven seasons with the Browns, Chubb became much more than an accomplished running back. He finished his Cleveland tenure with 6,843 rushing yards, ranking third in franchise history behind Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.
His physical running style, consistency and quiet leadership made him a fan favorite in Cleveland. Even during difficult stretches for the franchise, Chubb remained one of the team’s most dependable and respected players.
The Injury That Changed Everything – Chubb’s career took a major turn in 2023 when he suffered a devastating knee injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The injury required extensive rehabilitation and forced him to miss the majority of the 2023 season before he eventually returned to the field in 2024.
The setback was especially significant because it involved the same knee Chubb had severely injured during his college career. Still, he continued to work toward a comeback, eventually returning to play for Cleveland before beginning the next chapter of his career in Houston.
One Final Chapter – Chubb joined the Houston Texans for the 2025 season, giving him an opportunity to continue his career outside of Cleveland. He appeared in 15 games and recorded 506 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns during his final NFL campaign.
Although his production never returned to the levels of his prime, Chubb was able to finish his career on his own terms. He ultimately walked away healthy following a winning season, allowing him to close his football career on a positive note.
A Legacy That Will Last – Chubb finishes his NFL career with 7,349 rushing yards, 1,109 receiving yards and 59 total touchdowns across 100 regular-season games. He retires as one of the most productive running backs of the 2020s and one of the most accomplished players in Browns history.
More than the statistics, Chubb’s legacy will be defined by the perseverance he showed throughout his career. From overcoming a devastating college injury to battling back from another major knee injury in the NFL, he consistently demonstrated the toughness that became synonymous with his name.
The Bulldog Bows Out – For Chubb, football was always about more than individual accomplishments. In his retirement message, he reflected on the opportunities the game gave him and emphasized the importance of health and life beyond football.
Now, the former Georgia Bulldog and Cleveland Browns icon can walk away knowing he gave everything he had to the game. Nick Chubb’s NFL career may be over, but the impact he left on Cleveland, Georgia and football fans everywhere will remain.
