It’s that wonderful time of year again: Tax season! Tax filing season began towards the end of January, but by now we have reached the end of the season and should be receiving our tax return checks. But what are you going to do with the money? While it most likely isn’t enough to buy a car, there are a couple of things that you can do with the money.
- Put it in savings.
I know this is probably the most boring option out there and is probably what your mother is telling you to do with your money, but it is still a pretty good option. College students everywhere are struggling with money. If you put your tax return checks in your savings account, it can wait there until you need it. It can be there in case of emergency. Or, if you find something you really want but don’t think you have the extra money for it, your tax return money will be there.
- Save it for next year’s spring break.
It seems like everyone went somewhere cool for spring break this year. You can save your tax return money and put it towards the spring break trip of your dreams with your friends next year.
- Buy concert and baseball game tickets
Summer is coming up quickly and it will be here before you know it. Summer is concert and baseball season. I’m sure you will be itching to enjoy summer activities like going to these events with your friends. If you are a country music fan, this summer you can see artists like Florida Georgia Line, Sam Hunt, or Kenny Chesney. Coldplay and Ed Sheeran are also coming back to Boston. Baseball games are also a great summer activity. This is going to be a great season for the Red Sox so put some of your tax money towards games at Fenway Park.
- Splurge on one thing, save the rest
Maybe there is a pair of shoes that you have had your eye on for a while. Buy them! And then dump the rest of your money in savings to use on something you may want later or for emergencies. Saving the rest takes away the guilt of buying the shoes you didn’t really need but really wanted.
- Buy a new computer or upgrade another electronic device
A computer is something you can buy that is good and useful for your college career but also for your personal entertainment. If you don’t need a new computer yet you could buy or upgrade a different electronic device that has the same dual purpose like an iPad or a new phone.
