The Beacon has finalized publication dates (table below) for the 2012-2013 print issues of The Beacon. The Beacon will continue to post stories online very frequently throughout the year. In the first column, listed are the dates the issues will be released, the second column indicates when submissions, Letters to the Editor and advertisements need to be received by. Anyone is welcome to send comments, letters or submissions to Newspaper@merrimack.edu.
“I am very excited for the upcoming year,” said Patrick Lawlor, The Beacon’s editor in chief. “We have a strong and eager group of editors and veteran writers that are ready to come back and work hard,” Lawlor said. “I am very grateful to the Department of Communication Arts & Sciences as they continue to provide students who are eager to take on journalism and news production as part of their course load,” he said.
While Lawlor expects to have one of the largest staff in a few years, The Beacon always wants more students who are looking for experiences in writing, photography, business management, and information technology. Lawlor, a former associate editor in chief and business manager will serve as The Beacon’s chief executive, for 2012-2013. Former News Editor Joan Corcoran will take on the second in command position to Lawlor as associate editor in chief and chief of staff. Continuing in his role of Standards Editor, Stephen Tullgren will sit on the Executive Board as senior editor and counsel. The Beacon is advised by Jim Chiavelli, adjunct professor of communication arts and sciences.
The Beacon is funded by the student activity fee distributed by the Student Government Association. While The Beacon is a club, students can enroll in COM3452 & COM 3453 (Newspaper and New Media Production). In a decision made by the Executive Board this summer, The Beacon has pledged all revenue to the Emmaus Inc., an organization in Haverhill focused on homelessness prevention.
